Are you about to enter professional life, are you looking for a job, or do you want to improve your career? I will show you tips with which you can give your application a special flavor.
One gets his dream job after school, is in the same company from training to retirement and enjoys his life. The other bites his teeth when looking for a job, his search for the right job is like the famous trip to Canossa.
But why is that actually the case? Is it really just a question of certificates and qualifications? From experience, I can guarantee that this is not the case. On the one hand, I did not finish school myself with fame and, on the other hand, I was allowed to make some personnel decisions myself.
So if you may not have finished your school career with the best grades, don’t worry. The school certainly has its right to exist and there is something in the saying that we do not learn for parents, but for life. But believe me, your professional future is not just based on the scrap of white paper called certificate.
But enough to go around, here are my tips for your successful path to a dream job:
1.) Don’t make yourself smaller than you are!
Avoid letting yourself be influenced by things like the bad testimony mentioned above or negative sayings (“You can’t do this!”) From your friends and family. Neither do you have to stand on the assembly line because your father did it or because of it you cannot study because no one in your family has done it before, nor does your certificate have any meaning for where you can apply or not.
Many people who left school with a bad report were not stupid but simply did not feel like having other worries (divorce from parents, first great love, puberty, etc.) or even felt bored or underwhelmed by the learning material. That may sound unbelievable at first, but it is often these “rebels” who really step on the gas in later life. It is not uncommon for the nerd / looser constellations to shift significantly after school or to even reverse.
So what matters is what you think you can do. What do you want to do and achieve, where are your dreams and visions? Do it the same to Adenauer’s words “What do I care about my chatter from yesterday” and do not care about what was yesterday but only about what lies ahead. All paths in life are completely open to you, no matter what anyone wants to tell you. (You should also read this: »Choice of social environment )
2.) Find out what you want!
Before you start applying, you should first understand what you want to do. And here too, don’t let your social environment push you into roles that are believed to suit you.
Observe yourself attentively in your everyday life and find out what suits you best and what is fun and enjoyable. Are you someone who likes to tackle, assemble or repair something? Do you like to work with people or do you like to be creative? Are you a team player or do you prefer lone fighters?
You will not believe how many different professions there are in our world today. You may not even have heard of some.
So take your time to find out what suits you and do one or the other internship to get to know different professional fields.
3.) Don’t wait for the others!
I keep hearing: “No one is looking at the moment” or “I’ve already sent 100 applications”. That may be so, but you should make one thing clear: a boss or personnel manager who doesn’t know you doesn’t wait for you to apply to him.
So you have to help your “ fate ” a little: Apply where you want to work, not just where you are looking for. This is called an unsolicited application and is always better received than if you apply for a job advertisement together with 60 other interested parties.
Prepare an application folder, dress up a bit (see below) and go straight to your desired company. You don’t have to make an appointment for this, because you only want to submit your application personally (at least officially).
You will be amazed how much better something like this arrives than clarifying something by phone or sending an application by post. It is not uncommon for the decision-maker to be on site and there is an immediate conversation. So what to wait for, use the time and be one step ahead of the others!
4.) Vitamin B as the key to success
Do you already have contacts or friends in the industry? Then use them. There is nothing better than someone who can suggest you for a job at a company than someone who knows someone there. There are surveys that show that most positions are only filled by such recommendations.
If you have contacts in the industry, but none of them are related to the company you want, please ask them to at least write you a letter in which they recommend you and your skills.
5.) Fall out of order in writing
Everything is regulated in Germany. In this country, DIN standards specify exactly what the letter of a letter or application should look like, where the date and address belong and what intervals should be observed.
Sure, you can argue about such norms, but they do make sense and you should stick to them. But what I strongly advise against is to use ready-made sample texts from the Internet or from any application coach for the application itself.
You are welcome to use such templates in order to comply with the formal norms mentioned above, but please avoid using pre-made texts where you only have to enter the position and information about yourself.
Believe me, hiring managers are just people and nothing is more boring than getting the same cover letter for 50-100 applications. Because you know who stands out positively from the crowd there? It is the one application in which the decision-maker reads something else.
So stand out from the crowd and write a really personal application, why you are the best choice for this job. Don’t forget spelling and grammar!
Avoid populating your application folder with too much information, evidence and certificates. Limit yourself to the things that are relevant to the job. Your forklift license is good and nice, but has less of a job to do when you apply to become a tax clerk, as it could give the impression that you don’t know what you actually want.
The same applies to the subject of certificates. If you have caught up on your Abitur and have subsequently pursued a degree, there is no reason to send your high school diploma with you. If you are interested in yourself and need proof of the points listed in your CV, you will be contacted.
7.) Show that you want the job
The application has been sent, so now it’s time to wait. Waiting for an answer, whether they invite you to a conversation or whether another refusal sails into the house.
No, not exactly! Show the company that you really want the job and pick up the phone after 1-2 weeks. Ask whether your application has arrived and whether you have had the time and opportunity to examine your documents.
In this way, you will be reminded on site and show that you have a real interest in the position and have not only sent one of your series applications there.
8.) Convince yourself in a personal conversation
An interview is nothing more than a sales pitch. Even if you don’t want to become a seller, you have to be here. Because in the end you have to make your person palatable, so you have to be able to sell yourself.
Use facts to make it clear to your future boss why you are the right person for the job. You should consider the reasons for this in advance and not in the conversation itself.
If you are particularly confident, you already have a job and just want to improve, you can also go one step further and turn the tables. Make it clear to your counterpart that you are already satisfied and that they have to convince you and not vice versa. You can then ask why you should start with this company and not with another.
9.) Pay attention to the correct appearance!
“Clothes make people”, you already know that. So make sure that you show up for your interview reasonably and appropriately. So freshly showered, shaved and with clean clothes.
By the way, it also means that you appear appropriately dressed for the branch or the job you applied for. So when it comes to a job as a bank clerk, you appear at least in a shirt with a tie (better in a suit), when you have applied to a gym, but also a little more casual and sporty.
The important thing is that it doesn’t look too much. You should act respectfully and radiate through your clothes that the appointment is important to you today, but nobody expects you to show up with a suit, tie and meticulously styled hair when you apply for a job as a car mechanic.
So before you leave, look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself whether your appearance matches both the importance of the conversation and the job you are aiming for.
10.) Be authentic!
Try not to pretend in the conversation, but to be yourself. Nothing comes more stupid than if you try to conduct the conversation with unnecessarily high German, although you can see that you would not do it in real life or that you could not master it ,
Be warm, friendly, confident and honest. Speak clearly and make sure that your counterpart feels comfortable in your presence. The same applies here as in life: The chemistry must be right. And you can only achieve this through your appearance, your behavior, your facial expressions, gestures and your words.
This also includes revealing something about you and your private life. You don’t have to do that legally, but it makes you much more human when you know that you also have hobbies that you pursue, for example.
So, they were already. My tips for your way to a dream job. I hope you could take a few things with you and I would be happy to hear from you.
Until then, good luck!
