Go through school, complete an apprenticeship and then work until retirement. Some people no longer seem to have the right to life. The times were never better to take it into your own hands.
Sometimes it’s a horror. We have never had more fantastic opportunities to shape our lives than we do today, and yet it seems as if some would rather let their lives pass them by rather than use them for themselves.
The former people of poets and thinkers, today a people of people who just somehow want to make ends meet? With a job that does not necessarily make you happy, but at least ensures survival somewhere?
With such a way of thinking, it would probably not only be the hairs on the neck of Einstein, Edison and Adenauer, no, even today some of the more positive contemporaries would smile about so much naivety.
History and education
100 years ago, when it still played a very large role, from which social class you came and what gender you had, you usually had no choice but to do the same to your parents.
As a man, you chose a profession similar to that of your father – advancing to a higher social class was almost impossible – and as a woman you stayed at home behind the stove, where you took care of your husband and family. Depending on how old you are, you probably know this view and role allocation from your parents and grandparents.
The time in and after the two world wars of course also had a lasting impact on the generation at that time and ensured that the focus was initially on something that might not be big but was safe.
Subsequent generations, such as your parents, often adopted this attitude to life without ever questioning it.
A lot has changed compared to the time. Fortunately, you don’t have to build a bombed-out city today or watch the stove as a woman for life. And even if some contemporaries like to tell themselves the opposite, today it hardly matters which social class someone originally comes from.
The training and further education opportunities have become the same for everyone, and even those who may have dreamed of something while still at school can now easily catch up on their Abitur or a degree via the second or third educational path, which the state can do with educational vouchers, student loans and grants royally supported.
Technological progress, especially the development of the Internet, has created numerous new opportunities, be it for work, a potential independence or as a source for daily further training.
Despite all of this, it seems like many of us don’t know what to do with ourselves today.
While our grandparents sometimes lost everything in the war and were happy to later enable their children (i.e. your parents) to start solid jobs, many of us gave up today in our early or mid 20s.
Every Monday morning the majority of the working population groans under their job and wishes for the weekend. Less breaks later in the breaks, people start swarming over how many years you have left before you can finally retire.
Normally, in such situations, common sense would have to ask why not do something that is fun for you instead. But this reasoning is usually nipped in the bud with the excuse that you don’t know what could be. After all, you don’t have the necessary knowledge, the appropriate contacts or the luck you need for it. Um … yes … exactly …
Sections of our population seem to believe that, on the one hand, more successful or happier people are born intelligently and competently and, on the other hand, they have simply leased all the happiness in the world instead of thinking for a second that these people are instead of whining and to come to terms with their situation and have striven for new goals.
For Otto normal consumers, it seems to be an incentive today to gain 10 more Facebook friends or +1 skill in any computer game, but not to see life itself as a challenge (and to a certain extent as a game), in which goals, Achieve success and skills.
Instead of just sitting on the floor of your pants for a few years and fighting for what you really want (whether it’s the freedom to do what you want or to have the absolute dream job), you are often bothered with a boring or to do a mediocre job, only at 67 or 70, when it is good to have 10-15 years as frail man or frail woman for his real desires.
So if there is really intelligent life outside of Earth and they are watching us, believe me, they will show us the bird.
What are you?
Please be aware of one thing: you only have one life. This life is limited in time. No ifs and buts. If you deduct your childhood and growing up into adulthood, you may have 60 or 70 years from then until you bite the grass.
Do you really, seriously want to spend 40-50 years doing things that you don’t enjoy and that you only do so that you can bridge the time to the end?
Be clear about what you really want and what you really enjoy. Ask yourself if you would do your job today if you couldn’t get money for it.
Of course, you shouldn’t immediately quit your job, or start your own business as a young professional. That would be too risky and won’t get you anywhere.
Instead, you should simply consider life as what it is in the end: a magic box of unlimited possibilities. You can study and become a doctor, raise a peanut plantation in Cuba or give pleasure to people with stories written by you.
It doesn’t matter, the main thing is that it makes you happy and lets you get up with a smile on your face every morning. Become a doer and just stop participating.
If tomorrow you get involved in a terrible accident that will cost you your life, then all your previous, perhaps unfortunate, work towards the future has been for the cat. So make sure you spend every day doing things that suit your nature and don’t work for other people for a time that you may not experience.
Your life is in your hand, all alone in yours. Luckily.
