Being satisfied – that’s what many people want when you ask them. Some may say now that they would rather be happy, but satisfaction and happiness are closer together than it may seem at first. To be happy is a prerequisite for being happy. Whoever is dissatisfied with himself, what he does and creates, or with the people around him, will never be happy.
But how do you achieve satisfaction in a world in which we are forced every day to do things that actually strive for us and do not correspond to our real self? Basic, ever-present satisfaction is difficult to achieve and requires some sacrifice as you have to get rid of material dreams except in exceptional cases. But even as a career person, whether employed or self-employed, you can lead a happier life through more satisfied moments.
The trick is to bring about happy moments as often as you can. To do this, you need to be aware that short moments of satisfaction and happiness also have a positive effect on your well-being and mood in other moments and in your life as a whole. Perhaps they are not enough to achieve deep, basic satisfaction, for example because you continue to pursue a profession that does not fill you. But you don’t have to turn your life upside down and turn it upside down. Rather, consciously bringing about happy moments and the resulting greater satisfaction will help you to take bigger steps in the future with less fear and more anticipation for the new.
So how can you achieve more satisfied moments? Can this be enforced or brought about artificially? That’s fine! Only you shouldn’t find it compelling. What is it that (even if we are free and should enjoy our time) simply does not allow us to calm down and feel content? In most cases, it is the thoughts about the past and the future that make us unhappy and restless. Great memories of a great vacation or the anticipation of meeting a loved one can of course trigger feelings of excitement in us and should take place. Unfortunately, on Saturday or Sunday morning we mostly think of a customer’s complaint shortly before the start of the weekend and the mountain of tasks that await us in the new week. The complaint mentioned is in the past and the upcoming tasks in the future and now is free! Why do they still have you under control?
Where is the problem?
Because we don’t live in the now, but in the past or the future. Therefore, we are not able to be satisfied, even if everything is fine and we could finally relax and enjoy the time. And when we try to focus on the moment, our thoughts keep drifting to all the bad things. Many people are predisposed to think negative thoughts rather than focus on the good. So you always have a nice excuse, because there was always something going on, life didn’t go that way and everything is against you anyway. But nobody who really thinks about it can wish for themselves. Whether your disposition is as pronounced as described or you just feel stressed and dissatisfied due to the past or upcoming – it will help you tremendously to deliberately deal with this problem and to accept it. If you then decide to change something on this, we would like to help you with our experience and basic suggestions.
Life in the here and now (at least temporarily)
At first it sounds logical, but it is trite, but it’s true: what happened in the past cannot be changed. No matter whether you were responsible, involved or simply concerned. Do this here and there, but especially if you want to bring a happy moment, be aware! It often helps to just think about it and to tell it to you yourself, in silence or quietly with lip movements: “No matter what happened – whether long ago or recently, whether through my fault or not – it has passed and is no longer important.” You should not regret mistakes, but see them as a way to act differently next time – this is called experience and makes you stronger, more confident and relaxed. So if you believe in it
Now there is another trick to at least temporarily hide unpleasant things that lie in front of you and to be satisfied in the here and now. This is about mindfulness. The entire principle of mindfulness and related theories and methods will be taken up again later and discussed in detail. For starters, it is enough to know that mindfulness is about consciously perceiving yourself and the world around you. Here are some tips that I would like to use myself on a free Saturday or Sunday to gain satisfaction in the here and now and enjoy the moment:
- Taste: Concentrate on the taste of your morning bun, croissant, muesli, coffee or orange juice. If you pay close attention to this, you will find much more nuances in taste than is usually the case
- Noises: When you hear the birds chirping outside, focus on the different pitches – which song is being played there? Or concentrate on lapping the water in the shower – a common tip that just works great. Find other sounds that you pay close attention to
- Feelings: How does the clothing feel on your skin when you move? How does it feel to run your tongue over your teeth or take a deep breath? Find your own things here again and make it a ritual to pay close attention to them regularly
Other very effective methods for moments of relaxation and satisfaction, which you can enjoy completely independently of worries and fears, are, for example, autogenic training or progressive muscle relaxation. We will also take a closer look at these later. For the moment, it is enough if you realize that consciously creating happy and happy moments in your life has an impact far beyond those moments. Make yourself aware that you really want to be happy and start with the described approaches to steer yourself in this direction. I started the same way and can tell you that it is fun and worthwhile.
I wish you lots of fun starting a happier life.
