What is emotional intelligence?
The “emotional intelligence” describes as a collective term different competencies and characteristics, which influence the relationship of a person to himself and others significantly positive. The term was coined in the early 1990s by two American psychologists, Peter Salovey, and John D. Meyer, and published by the journalist and psychologist, Daniel Goleman, the bestselling author of “Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ.” known to a broad public.
People who have emotional intelligence are usually more successful in their professional and private lives than people who only have a high IQ or a high level of professional qualification.
Basics of Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence does not describe any intellectual abilities, and thus faces the classical IQ that is measurable in various talents and perceptions. Even in the late 20th century, the general opinion was that people with a high IQ were automatically successful professionally. However, studies and observations by scientists have been able to refute this.
Science journalist Daniel Goleman based his theory of emotional intelligence, which he used in his book, on his question as to what exactly distinguished successful individuals with an intact private life. His research has shown that people with certain characteristics are very often in management positions or successful in occupations that require a particularly diplomatic approach in personal dealings. This makes it possible to recognize, accept and utilize both one’s own strengths and weaknesses. This results in the ability to adapt one’s own behavior to situations, to control and regulate emotions and to motivate oneself and others, even in problematic situations. Therefore, people with high emotional intelligence often work in responsible positions and can deal well with professional and private crises.

Whether in a professional or private environment, emotionally intelligent people always transfer their skills to dealing with others. They usually have a high level of communication skills, based not only on an understandable expression but also on the gift of listening to others and being able to interpret their feelings and body language correctly. For this reason, they have a pronounced sense of tact that enables them to sense the needs of their fellow human beings and to act accordingly.
Emotional intelligence goes hand in hand with the capacity for empathy that allows one to empathize with others and build a mutually beneficial relationship. Not only do people with high EQs get connected quickly, but they also have a strong desire to maintain relationships and friendships over the long term. They are able to lead an intact family and private life and to treat their colleagues with respect, as they are always tolerant and accept the reactions and actions of others that they may not approve of.
